Gracie - 20 year mare

Iltschi got his spotlight, so it’s my turn!

My name is Gracie and I’m around 20 years old! You might remember when I arrived at HHERS, not only do I have a massive melanoma under my tail (which cannot be removed), but I also arrived with a hole in my chest. I was so worked up in the back pens of the auction, I ran straight into a gate, where the large bolt punctured through my chest. The paperwork said I was used as a brood mare and saddle horse, but was to be sold as a meat horse.

But, that’s my past. Let’s discuss my future!

My chest has fully healed, and you would have to look real close to see any signs that there was once a hole! Unfortunately, I do have a significant melanoma under my tail which cannot be removed, and a small one on my back leg. Neither of these impact my quality of life at this time. The vet has checked internally, and as of right now, the melanoma is external only, and not growing internally. I’ll need to be checked every 3-6 months, to make sure it’s not spreading inside. The vet said I could have many years ahead of me, pending how fast the melanoma grows. I have had a much needed dental, vaccinations, and multiple physical exams since being at HHERS, and I’m living my best life!

I love to trot around with the giant goofy boy they call Atlas. I can’t keep up with him, but he seems pretty happy to follow my lead most days. When it’s time to be caught, I run circles around you, tossing my head just to show you I still have some spice, but give me a minute, and once it’s out of my system, I’m very easy to catch. I trailer well, lead great, and am good for the farrier (but prefer to have the moral support of my friends to help me relax). Overall, I’m young at heart and feeling really good, looking for my new home! I am very gentle with kids, indifferent to dogs, and am an exceptional addition to any herd, as I have no interest in being the leader. Live and let live is my new motto!
