Gracie came to us summer 2023, with a very significant melanoma & a hole through her chest. Her chest is fully healed now, but the melanoma has recently grown. We have her on a 6 month cycle of medications with good results of shrinking melanomas. Because of her need for medication, her growing melanoma, and her age , being in her early 20s, Gracie is now a sanctuary horse. She has tons of spirit and life left, we really hope these meds work!

Nesta came to us spring 2024 with baby Rhys. She was at a local traders, and at risk. Wished was very emaciated and so scared. Nesta has been fully vetted, and is looking amazing now. Unfortunately she has some really bad navicular, so we are keeping her as comfortable as we can, for whatever time she has left.

Applejack is around 30 years old and for his age, is doing amazingly. He was rescued from slaughter and came to HHERS with Fawkes. Apple is a sanctuary horse, as it took him a while to settle in, and we aren’t sure how much time he will have with us, it would be unfair to move him. He is Living the rest of his life with his foster brothers

Freddy came to us at 33 years old, severely emaciated. Despite his age, his blood work was good and we gave him a much needed dental. Freddy was only with us 4 short weeks before we had to sadly lay him to rest. He made a little family in the herd and enjoyed the time he did have. RIP Freddy

Spirit was picked up at an auction, knowing he would need euthanasia. This poor baby was in severe pain, with a leg that needed correction when he was newborn and was ignored. No surgery could give Him a quality of life, so we laid him to rest, with all the love we could give him. RIP Spirit

Bailey was only with us for a couple hours before we had to make the call to euthanize. We brought her straight to our vet, as she couldn’t put her leg straight from an old injury. We did X-rays and there was no humane way to fix either I’d her bad legs. Her quality of life was extremely low, and she could barely get around. Bailey was nothing but kind and sweet for the time we knew her, despite all the pain she was experiencing. RIP Bailey.

Mr. Snuggles was saved by another rescue at auction, then transferred to our care. He was born 1995, his owners got him 1998, and brought him to auction this year, making him 28 years old. Snuggles spent all Spring and Summer roaming the yard with his kids. He would nicker to them and follow them around. Fall 2023 we laid our sweet boy to rest after it was clear he could not put weight on, after extensive vetting. It wouldn’t have been humane to make him do an Alberta winter. RIP Mr Snuggles, you will be missed by your girls so much.

Rudolph was a beautiful nearly 30 year old gelding. He arrived to us by auction, with a significant heart murmur, old fractured ribs, minor arthritis and extremely sharp teeth. He got an echocardiogram, showing us he wasn’t in heart failure, pain management for his ribs, and a float for his teeth. Rudy was doing amazing, but after a recent seizure, which he quickly recovered from, we decided to make him a sanctuary horse. His knees started giving him a lot of problems, so we went forward with injections, which unfortunately didn’t help. In August 2023, Rudy was laid to rest. RIP our beautiful old man.

After having Coyote for a few months, we noticed her getting very sore again. X-rays showed significant changes in her navicular, and we made the decision with our vet and farrier to say goodbye. Pain management was no longer helping her. RIP beautiful girl ❤️

Jingle- 25 year gelding

Jingle arrived from auction after his family sent him to he sold for meat only. He had severe arthritis, so we managed his pain with previcox and injections. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, we could no longer keep him comfortable. He was a beloved family horse, who adored the kids. He touched hearts from all over, and we are so grateful we had time with him, even though it was far too short. RIP Jingle Bell

Edison - 25 to 30 year old mini gelding

UPDATE: We laid Edison to rest January 2023. He went surrounded by his people, eating all his favourite foods and treats. RIP our beautiful, sassy old man. We are so grateful for the full year we had with him

HHERS Sanctuary Animal

Edison has done A lot of moving around his in life time. We at HHERS, have decided that Edison will live out his golden years, here with us, with the love of all the kids he adores most. Edison has ongoing treatment for cushings and uvetitis. The cost of his medications/senior mash monthly, is roughly $150/month. To sponsor Edison, please look under our “Ways to help” tab.

Magnus- Late 20’s Paint x Draft

Update - Unfortunately, we had to let Magnus go. Our hearts break, knowing that a person did this to him. We were so blessed to have him in our lives.

Magnus arrived to us thanks to our wonderful farrier reaching out to us after she saw him in need. Magnus arrived severely emaciated, with severe ringbone, as well as a very traumatic old injury to his stifle. His stifle is floating and not connected to anything, therefore making it sore to walk. We have managed to spend the summer spoiling him rotten and managing his pain. However, come fall, we will have to say goodbye to Magnus. Winter in Canada will be far too hard on his joints, and one small slip could leave him in excruciating pain. This decision was not made lightly, and was made with our vet and farrier. In the meantime, hes enjoying his life & loving being part of a herd!
